Lena Headey Saddles Up Against Gillian Anderson in Netflix's Western The Abandons
There's a new image out, and it's a jolt: five riders cutting through a forest at night while the trees burn around them. You can almost hear the hooves and feel the heat. That's the vibe of The Abandons - raw, urgent, and itching for a fight.
The series drops us into Washington Territory, 1854. It's a rough patch of land where outcasts and orphans try to stake a life while the powerful make their own rules. If you've been waiting for a Western that actually feels dangerous, this one's not shy about it.
At the center are two matriarchs: Lena Headey (movies and tv series) as Constance Van Ness and Gillian Anderson (movies and tv series) as Fiona Nolan. Their families collide over "two crimes, an awful secret, a star-crossed love," and a silver-rich stretch of land both sides want. And yes, someone's literally trying to burn the other off it. Subtlety isn't the currency out here.
Why this one has teeth
Kurt Sutter (movies and tv series) - the mind behind Sons of Anarchy - created and executive produced the series before exiting as showrunner last year. After that, Otto Bathurst oversaw production with Robert Askins. EPs also include Chris Keyser, Stephen Surjik, Emmy Grinwis, and Jon Paré. That's a lot of seasoned hands for a frontier feud.
The pitch is simple, and that's why it works: haves vs. have-nots, with the law looking the other way. The new still sells it - speed, smoke, and a choice: run or fight. Here's what this could mean: the show's not just going for dust and sunsets; it wants consequence.
Cast to watch
It's a bit of a homecoming for Headey, who previously voiced Evil-Lyn in Netflix's Masters of the Universe projects. Anderson's coming in hot off Tron: Ares and, yes, she still knows how to play formidable. The bench is deep, too.
