Death Stranding Anime Finds a Home on Disney+. Here's What's Coming in 2027
If you felt the quiet loneliness of Death Stranding, this will hit close. The series is getting an animated take - and it's headed to Disney+ in 2027.
Hideo Kojima (movies and tv series) showed up at the Disney+ Originals Preview at Hong Kong Disneyland Resort and confirmed it himself. The show's working title is Death Stranding Isolations, and it's set in the same fractured world as the games - just with a new story and new faces.
The setup
It's traditional, hand-drawn 2D animation. Japan's E&H Production is leading the work, with Takayuki Sano directing. Character designs come from Ilya Kuvshinov (movies and tv series), who previously helped define the look of Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045.
The story tracks a young man and woman as they head out on an uncertain trip through a post-Death Stranding America. You'll hear echoes of the original game - those ghosts crossing into our world, the explosions that follow, the way isolation rewires people. But this isn't a retread.
New characters. Familiar stakes.
Sam Bridges is out there in the background, but the spotlight shifts. The synopsis teases a few figures you'll want to keep an eye on:
- An old man (movies and tv series) trying to save what's left of humanity, but not the way Bridges would.
- A female warrior who thinks constant conflict is the only way forward.
- A boy with a score to settle with Bridges.
- A girl who chooses loneliness and tries to live with it.
It builds to a simple promise: as their paths cross near the edge (movies and tv series) of collapse, "another story of Death Stranding begins." And yes - "another explosion."
Why this matters for TV and streaming folks
- Disney+ keeps courting adult animation with big-name IP. This one brings a built-in global audience and strong brand recall.
- Hand-drawn 2D is a deliberate creative choice - and a production commitment. Expect a longer runway and careful marketing beats leading into 2027.
- The show isn't just fan service. New protagonists mean broader entry points for viewers who never touched the game.
The broader Death Stranding pipeline
There's more on the way beyond the series. Kojima Productions and Los Angeles studio Line Mileage are developing an adult animated feature, with Aaron Guzikowski (Raised by Wolves) writing. Separately, A24 is moving ahead with a live-action film.
For the record, the anime hits Disney+ exclusively in 2027. If you want the baseline before then, the original game and its sequel, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, are available on PlayStation 5. You can check Sony's official page for the sequel here.
The announcement first dropped via Kojima Productions' channels. You can read the official post on X right here.
Here's what this could mean. Disney+ gets a moody, prestige-style anime with a strong auteur stamp. Fans get new corners of the Death Stranding map to wander. And the rest of us? We'll see if a show about connection - made in a hand-drawn style that feels human - can cut through the noise in 2027.
