The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants locks Dec. 19 release, drops new trailer
Holiday season just got louder. Our favorite Bikini Bottom crew hits theaters December 19, chasing a ghost pirate and a whole lot of chaos - yes, including that "lucky brick" gag that fans will be quoting in the lobby.
Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Movies rolled out a second trailer and fresh images for the 3DCG feature, The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants. Video is available below - the trailer will appear here automatically.
The setup is simple and silly in the best SpongeBob way. SpongeBob wants to prove he's a "big guy (movies and tv series)" to Mr. Krabs, so he tails The Flying Dutchman (movies and tv series) - a swashbuckling ghost pirate - into the deepest part of the sea. Things escalate quickly. Logic takes a vacation.
And that's the point. It's bright, loud, and built for a crowd that knows every catchphrase but still wants something new to laugh at with their kids, their friends, or, let's be honest, by themselves on a Thursday night.
Cast
- Tom Kenny (movies and tv series), Clancy Brown (movies and tv series), Rodger Bumpass (movies and tv series), Bill Fagerbakke (movies and tv series), Carolyn Lawrence (movies and tv series), and Mr. Lawrence (movies and tv series)
- With George Lopez (movies and tv series), Isis "Ice Spice" Gaston, Arturo Castro (movies and tv series), Sherry Cola (movies and tv series), Regina Hall (movies and tv series), and Mark Hamill (movies and tv series)
- Ice Spice makes her voice acting debut and brings an original song, "Big Guy"
Crew
- Director: Derek Drymon (movies and tv series)
- Producers: Lisa Stewart (movies and tv series), p.g.a., Pam Brady (movies and tv series), Aaron Dem
- Executive Producers: Marc Ceccarelli, Vincent Waller (movies and tv series), Pete Chiappetta, Anthony Tittanegro, Andrew Lary
- Screenplay: Pam Brady and Matt Lieberman; Story by Marc Ceccarelli & Kaz and Pam Brady
- Based on the series SpongeBob SquarePants created by Stephen Hillenburg (movies and tv series)
Here's what this could mean. A December 19 bow puts the film in the family (movies and tv series) corridor right before the holiday break - prime playtime for repeat viewings and merch tie-ins. Ice Spice is a smart crossover bet, pulling younger music fans while giving marketing fresh hooks beyond the core SpongeBob crowd.
And creatively, the logline signals comfort-food chaos: big set-pieces, ghost ship spectacle, and jokes that swing between absurd and sweet. If you program screens or cover animation, you'll want to watch opening weekend velocity here - especially with the brand's built-in reach and 3DCG sheen that travels well in international markets.
